Childcare – 1 : Chapter 11

Bening a parent_banner

Here is the latest instalment in the MM1 wikibook collection, dedicated to childcare.

The compilation of this wikibook, again, was a joint effort of the MM1 class of 2006. All of the individuals involved in the development process have been specifically assigned a sub-topic with which to research and present.

In particular, my topic was on “Being a parent“. This chapter provides parents with some helpful guidelines on being a parent, in-terms of what to expect and what to do when faced with a certain situation.

Please feel free to view my chapter along with the the other chapters in this book.

>> Here is an interview with a mother about her personal opinion on parenting.

>> If you are interest in the scheduling of this project feel free to visit my voo2do public account.

The compilation of this video book was a joint effort of the MM1 class of 2006. All of the individuals involved in the development process have been specifically assigned a sub-topic with which to research and present.

Personally, the overall experience of making this book was great as it opened my eyes to many positive and negative aspects about working on the virtual world.

ENJOY!!

Information vs. Instruction

“Information is not instruction” was M. David Merrill’s response to the inadequacy of many computer-based training programs of his time, in which he believed tend to concentrate more on technology rather than proper design and learning outcomes. An example of this would be the early learning programs, derisively known as page-turners, which were nothing more than books on a computer where learners were forced to passively read huge chunks of text on the screen. Furthermore, with the early computer-based the only interactivity which the learner experienced was through the press of the ‘Enter’ key and the ‘spacebar’. The result of these page-turners often led to eyestrain and boredom rather than improved learning and performance.

In more recent times, with the introduction of the ‘world wide web’ (www), there has been an unprecedented move towards the use of web technology as a training and education medium. However, the early results produced by such a move has proven that there is still too much emphasis on the technology portion. Little attention is given to proper design and learning outcomes, leaving web-based training programs, again, looking very much like electronic versions of traditional printed manuals, articles, tip sheets and reference guides. While these are valuable and accessible resources, they lacked the necessary elements of an effective learning/training program.

Hence, the rush to the use of web technology, without proper consideration, has led M. David Merrill to a great discovery, formulating a scientific approach to learning which he put simply, “If you don’t provide adequate practice, if you don’t have adequate knowledge structure, if you don’t provide adequate guidance, people don’t learn.”

To guarantee the effectiveness of any training program, remember that while technology will always change the way at which adults learn will not. Keep in mind Merrill’s keys to learning:

- provide structured knowledge

- provide practice

- provide guidance
